What is Traceability? Requirements Traceability has been described as the ability to "describe and follow the life of a requirement in both a forwards and backwards direction (i.e., from its origins, through its development and specification, to its subsequent deployment and use), and through periods of ongoing refinement and iteration in any of these phases". (Gotel et al., 2002). Software Traceability extends the definition to encompass multi-directional traceability centered around diverse artifacts. Traceability supports safety analysis, change impact analysis, project intelligence and much more across evolving, adapting software systems.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to software traceability. Projects of different types, sizes, and criticality levels all have their own reasons for requiring traceability and their own unique constraints that influence its implementation. Traceability planning and managing involves determining the stakeholder and system requirements for traceability on a project, and designing a suitable traceability strategy to enable them to be satisfied. Trace links can be created manually as part of the software development process. Much state of the art work focuses on automating the trace link creation process using information retrieval, machine learning, AI approaches, or even eye-tracking devices; or leveraging the software developing environment to prospectively capture trace links.'.

Traceability is only as useful as the software engineering activities it supports. Main applications include safety and compliance analysis, change impact analysis, visualizing project data, and querying software projects. Current efforts focus on better understanding the needs of developers and other project stakeholders in order to deliver better algorithms, tools, and processes for practitioners.
